During the COVID-19 pandemic, municipal court sessions in person were canceled. We are now having in-person court sessions again and we are fully operating to the public.

Covid-19 left us the convenience of the use of technology, certain cases may be able to be heard and adjudicated remotely. It is advised that you contact the court to set up a video court proceeding and provide your telephone and email address.

Mission Statement

We are an independent branch of government constitutionally entrusted with the fair and just resolution of disputes to preserve the rule of law and to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and this state.

Statement of core values

Required to accomplish our mission are four paramount values representing the core of what we stand for as an organization:

  •      Independence
  •      Integrity
  •      Fairness
  •      Quality Service

History of the Court

On February 1, 2009, the Dover Court entered into a shared services agreement with adjoining towns creating a Joint Municipal Court. If you received traffic, parking, or any form of criminal complaint between the periods below, your case will be heard in the Dover Municipal Court.

Mine Hill from February 1, 2009, through December 31, 2017.

Mt. Arlington Rockaway Borough, Wharton Borough, from February 1, 2009, thru December 31, 2018

After December 31, 2017, for Mine Hill and December 31, 2018, for Mt. Arlington, Rockaway Borough, and Wharton Borough your case will be heard at the respective municipal court location. They will NOT be heard at the Dover Municipal Court.

Pay your Traffic Tickets Online (click here)

Many parking and traffic summonses may be paid at njmcdirect.com, a payment site maintained by the New Jersey municipal Courts. If you have a Visa or Master Card credit/debit card, use this fast, secure, and convenient way to take care of your traffic tickets online. A processing fee, based on the penalty amount of the ticket, will be added to the transaction. Note: Only tickets that are issued for a payable violation that does not require a court appearance and traffic cases that have been disposed of in court with a time payment can be paid through njmcdirect.com.

Media

Mediation is a confidential, structured, non-adversarial process that allows a neutral third party to assist disputing parties in reaching a mutually acceptable solution. The mediation process can be a less expensive, informal, and more meaningful alternative than the traditional trial process. This is because of the efforts of trained volunteers and the resolution being decided by the participants. The court will refer appropriate cases to mediation.

Records Request

Please note, that the Municipal Courts are not bound by the OPRA requests that are sent to Municipal Clerks. Kindly complete this fillable form by typing in the information and send to the court. Please also note on the form if you would like a certified disposition or not.

Expedited Expungement

If you have been charged with a disorderly persons offense, petty disorderly persons offense, or municipal ordinance violations, and your charges are dismissed, you are acquitted, or your case is discharged without a conviction or finding of guilt, you may be eligible for an expedited expungement under N.J.S.A. 2C:52-6. To ascertain your eligibility and obtain more information, you may inquire with the municipal court at the time of disposition.

Informing Court Users that “The Work of the Courts Continues” – Animated Video

We need to make sure that New Jerseyans in need of court services are aware that we are available to provide those services.  We therefore created a two-minute whiteboard animation video that communicates a clear message that is especially important during this ongoing crisis: The New Jersey courts continue to work and to provide services to the public even though the courthouses are closed.

You can watch the video, “The Work of the Courts Continues,” on YouTube.  This video is part of our coordinated outreach to consumers of court services.  In addition to sharing the video internally and posting it on our Internet webpage, we will be distributing it to community partners to share with their clients.  You should feel free to share the video with individuals or groups in your community who may need legal services.

Our court system exists to serve the public. We can fulfill that mission only if those who need our services know that the courts are ready to provide those services, even while the doors of the courthouse are closed.
