Discover Dover Day Sunday June 12th
Release Date: June 08, 2011

Celebrate Community Pride at “Discover Dover Day”

The first annual Discover Dover Day Festival will be held at Crescent Field in Dover on Sunday, June 12, 2011 from 12PM – 6PM. The festival will showcase the vibrant Dover community with a variety of activities including a baby parade, children’s entertainment area, basketball tournament, vendors, music and entertainment. This event is sponsored in part by Saint Clare’s Health System, Dover Renaissance, Wells Fargo and The First Pentecostal Church of Dover.

The festival is being coordinated by the Discover Dover Day Coalition, a group of community members intent on celebrating Dover. “This is going to be a great family event,” says Jody Marcus, Event Coordinator and Executive Director of the Community Children’s Museum. “We want Discover Dover Day to bring the community together and highlight all the wonderful resources and activities available here!”

In a nod to a Dover tradition originating in 1926, the festival will open with a baby parade headed by Dover Mayor Dodd and other local dignitaries. Families are encouraged to dress up their babies and decorate their strollers for the fun walk from Parking Lot B on S. Morris Street through Crescent Field to the Ball field on Second Street for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

The performance stage at the field, donated by Healthfirst NJ, will host a variety of acts throughout the day including performers from the Dover music label Nine73, salsa band Tropy Band Orquesta, Community Theater at Mayo Performing Arts Center Teens, LEAP, Fashion show by Hispanic Affairs & Ibette Creations, Latin Mix from Dover High School and more. The much adored Dover music teacher Willy Carmona will be the Master of Ceremonies for the day of music and entertainment.

The Community Children’s Museum will present crafts for children, a moonwalk, Tweedles the Clown, who will make balloon art and a 50/50 raffle. Dover Rotary Club will be Barbequing for hungry festival goers and there will be tables from local organizations sharing their information from The Arts Council of the Morris Area to Kitties In Need to County College of Morris to Dover Renaissance and Historical Society. Girls Scouts of Northern New Jersey will be creating the Treasures of Dover Scavenger Hunt, Scout Troop 1923 will be on hand to help out with the logistics and Cub Scout Pack 187 will open the event with the National Anthem. St. Clare’s Health System, an event sponsor will have their EMS Touch Truck available for all to see. The First Pentecostal Church of Dover, another event sponsor, will be hosting a basketball tournament for kids at the park’s basketball courts. Zufall Health Center will be holding a Wii dance tournament and the Hope House will be displaying all of their services

Learning Express Toys and Silpada Jewelry are a few of the business that will be joining the fun with their wonderful items to sell. Look for Ruppert the Newark Bears baseball team mascot for some baseball fun. Near the end of the Festival (at 4pm) there will be a short bike parade where children can show off their newly decorated bikes with a BMX number plate, spoke noise makers, handle bar streamers and handle bar creatures done at Marty’s Reliable Bike Booth.  Throughout the day Marty’s will have a mechanic available to do bike safety checks for all. There will be a skills course set up to practice bike safety techniques like hand signaling and riding in a figure eight (helmets are required to participate). For more information visit the Discover Dover Day website at www.disoverdoverday.org, (973) 366-9060 or
