The Dover Area Historical Society will present the early history of Picatinny Arsenal on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Dover History Museum House located at 55 W. Blackwell St. in downtown Dover, next to the First Presbyterian Church of Dover.
The guest speaker at the 7:30 pm program is Dr. Patrick J. Owens, the official Army Historian at Picatinny Arsenal for the past 22 years. Dr. Owens, who earned his PhD in history from the University of Notre Dame will discuss the earliest years of Picatinny, starting with the establishment of the powder depot in 1880 up to just before World War I.
Highlights of the program will include the initial search for the depot site; why the Army chose this place in rural Morris County, the early construction work of the Army’s first major explosive factory; and such early achievements as the first armor-piercing explosive.
Discussions on the Arsenal’s first smokeless powder invention and some personal anecdotes about early employees at the base will also be covered in the program.
There is no charge for this program and refreshments will be served. For more information, call 973-366-0629.
